Trust

This is a huge word with BIG meaning. Trust, what does it truly mean? You are choosing to believe in another and usually wholeheartedly. On one of my trips, I noticed something simple and complicated.

A man asks another man about boarding his flight to take his bag and deliver it. This is a big No No at the airport. Touching or moving items that do not belong to oneself. The passenger agreed. Why?

The man who made the request was in the military. Would you do the same? I overheard the entire conversation so let me elaborate. The military man and the passenger both served so they had a comradery. This is a bond that many who have served share. It is hard to describe to outsiders.

I, myself, am an outsider since I have never served. Yes, members of my family have served in various forms of the military. The military man had to see if any passenger would deliver the bag. Job completed and someone who proudly did so for his fellow comrade.

This I found not only unique but amazing. He asked no questions beyond where and when. There was not only mutual respect but trust in one another. This used to be a way of life for lots of cultures. We now live in a world of mistrust and caution. I see the validity in both, but I was shocked at this passenger's willingness to help when he saw the uniform.

It brought up a few questions for me that I want you to sit with. One, does surviving in the military make you a part of a universal family of individuals who served? Two, would you have trusted a stranger due to them wearing a uniform? And lastly, do you think we have shifted so much over the years that trusting strangers is a benefit or a disadvantage?
